Donating

Donations definitely help us keep going. They allow people to take time off from their day job and allow us to buy cool stuff (e.g. servers, or stickers for events). Even small amounts do wonder, if they stack up! Please look at our OpenCollective and our Liberapay for donations. Or use SEPA to our team account, if you prefer:

Be it a single transaction, or a however-small standing order: Thank you in advance!

What do we use donation money for?

First, there are our regular expenses, like domain fees and server costs. Most of these are made transparent via our OpenCollective – others are still paid out of our own personal pockets.

Also made transparent at the same place are costs for material needed at events, such as flyers and stickers. Speaking of events, we'd really like to compensate travel and accomodation, for those of our team who participate to represent IzzyOnDroid (taking upon them stand duties etc) – something we didn't dare to pay for from our funds yet.

We'd also like to compensate team members who spend more than the occasional time slot on e.g. maintenance work (which meanwhile is a full-time job), improve our tooling, or have other expenses on behalf our project.

Last but not least (and without the list being comprehensive), we need some reserves for emergencies – be it hardware replacements, or legal things.

With all our spendings, we want to be as transparent as possible – which is what we use OpenCollective for. Those who support us financially, shall be able to see how their money is put to use.

What other funds do we receive?

We apply for grants, where suitable. There are never guarantees an application will be accepted, though (chances are usually lower than 10%). But for example, most of the improvements you've seen in 2025/26, would not have been possible without the help from NLnet (see the project page dedicated to this). Such grants are always bound to specific tasks.

You expect transparency here as well – and we want to deliver. Additional funding and its use, is documented at our corresponding floss.fund page.

How much do we need?

We could say, „the more we get, the more we can achieve“ – which would not be wrong. But there are limits. Our goal is not „exponential growth“ – but rather „solid sustainability“. So instead of simply putting a number („we need € 10,000 per month“), let's list some of the costs to cover:

  • domain fees sum up to about €200 per year
  • hosting costs accumulate to about €1,600 per year

These already sum up to about €150 „standing costs“ per month. Take a look at our OpenCollective and Liberapay to see how much of that is covered (as of this writing: very little). Now, there's more:

  • material for events (about €200+ each year)
  • costs for attending events (travel & accomodation; approximately €500+ per person and event, going by 2 years FOSDEM, paid out of our own pockets so far)
  • 1 person performing full-time maintenance, plus other team members spending significant parts of their free time

Still, the list is incomplete. So those €10,000 mentioned initially, are not a bad estimate. Currently, most of that weighs on our own shoulders.

Who can you contact to talk about a donation/grant?

You want to provide us with a grant, or support us with a donation, and have questions? We happily receive your mail! Our contact page holds information on how to reach us. And please take note that we won't accept any „venture capital“ or the like

Who benefits?

At first, obviously, our team. Once the „standing costs“ are covered, we don't have to pay them out of our own pockets anymore, in addition to the work we do for our project. The same applies to covering costs for travel and accomodation to attend events like FOSDEM – where we not only (re)present IzzyOnDroid and are available to talk to in person, but also make contact with other teams, to coordinate and help each other improve, get and spread new ideas – and share what we've learned.

Being able to compensate team members for larger chunks of work, allows them to take that time off from their day job, and still have their living cost covered. Our team members are very dedicated (otherwise we would not be able to provide you the service we do). Decent compensation enables them to do their work at our project, without having to weigh this against „making a living“ – thus also lowering the risk of burning them out.

And that is where you benefit, too – where everyone enjoying IzzyOnDroid benefits: a healthy team can deliver the best service. At IzzyOnDroid, we care about each other. And we care about you. Help us making the world a better place!
